Major cyber attack on several Israeli universities

Updated: Aug 22, 2023

On 4 April, several major Israeli universities were cyber-attacked. The hacker group "Anonymous Sudan" claimed to be the author of this attack targeting Tel Aviv University, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Haifa University, the Weizmann Institute of Science, the Open University of Israel and Reichman University.

The various websites of all these universities are inaccessible to browsers following a DDoS attack. The attack technique used did not result in the theft of personal information from the various institutions.

The attacking group issued a statement in which it spoke of an abandonment of Israeli education because of actions in Palestine. Since this attack, the group has again cracked down by hacking into the websites of several banks and the Israeli post office and has announced that it has attacked Israeli airlines and tourism companies.
